The announcement today of the appointment process for the next Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner of the National Anti-Corruption Commission is welcome.

I called for a process that is clear about what skills and experience are required for these roles, how candidates will be assessed and how conflicts of interest will be declared and managed.

I’m pleased to see both roles are being advertised publicly with clear selection criteria that emphasise personal integrity and leadership alongside technical skills. I thank the Attorney-General for her genuine and constructive engagement with me on this process.

The appointment of the Commissioner is an important opportunity to reset the leadership and organisational culture of the NACC. A clear and robust approach to identifying and managing conflicts of interest is critical. The goal is not to find someone with no conflicts – that’s unrealistic – but to ensure any conflicts are identified upfront and managed with integrity.
