I fundamentally believe Australia can have an orderly migration program while still respecting the rights of refugees and asylum seekers. The detention centres on Manus and Nauru were meant to be a temporary solution and they have been allowed to continue for far too long with conditions deteriorating to levels that are alarming to many Indi residents I speak to.
We must create a fair and efficient process to determine who requires safe haven so people can get on with rebuilding their lives in our communities. I believe that Australia should end offshore detention of asylum seekers as it is unnecessarily cruel to indefinitely detain those who have come to Australia specifically seeking our protection. It is for these reasons that I support the calls for Manus and Nauru to be closed and those still there should be resettled as soon as possible.
