End Pork Barrelling – An Interactive Community Forum

We need more integrity, transparency and accountability in Australian politics. That means making sure taxpayer money is spent fairly – not for political purposes to win votes.

I’m hosting an interactive community forum to bring together members of the public with experts to talk about the problem of pork barrelling and the potential solutions.

I’ve worked to improve integrity in politics since being elected, successfully campaigning for a National Anti Corruption Commission, which is now in operation. Now I’m turning my focus to cleaning up government spending on grants programs.

We’ve seen too many examples of pork barrelling – government grant money being used to win over voters in marginal seats. Think Sports Rorts, Commuter Car Park Rorts and the misuse of the Community Battery for Household Solar program – Australians are sick of it. Commonwealth grant money needs to be used for community need, not political greed.

This interactive community forum will explore how this practice has come to be, and how we might end it. In association with The Centre for Public Integrity, it promises to be an important conversation, but also a fun one. Geoffrey Watson SC will host a Hypothetical panel discussion that really helps us see the problem, and work towards the solution.

The event will be hosted in person at The Cube, Wodonga, and also livestreamed online – please register for tickets for either option.
